Ashley Moore was a 26-year-old Black trans woman w

Ashley Moore was a 26-year-old Black trans woman who was found dead on the streets in Newark, NJ in April 2020. She had strangle marks on her neck, but there was no police investigation. Ashley’s death was pushed under the rug by an inept police force that didn’t provide any investigation, nor did they reach out to Ashley’s mother, Starlet Carbin. Starlet found out about her daughter’s death when she went to her Facebook page to wish her a happy birthday. It would be many more months before Starlet would receive a police report, and she has yet to receive a coroner’s report. The police report she eventually received included information indicating there were gruesome strangle marks on Ashley’s neck. Yet there was no investigation. The police originally told Starlet that her daughter had likely been hit by a car. Yet there was zero evidence of that, and the police report itself didn't match that determination. The Newark LGBTQ Center—led by Beatrice Simpkins—stepped in in June 2020, after I met Starlet, she told me what happened, and I researched advocacy organizations that could help. The link in my bio goes to the Go Fund Me campaign I started for the LGBTQ Center for legal help, and to a video discussion among Starlet, Beatrice, and myself. It details the case, and the current needs. Ashley Moore was misgendered in her obituary and in the police report. Ashley Moore was treated as if she didn’t matter. As if Black lives DON’T matter. Our current needs are:
>> The Newark LGBTQ Center needs a legal fund for Ashley’s case so that there's an investigation, and for the other cases that they deal with each day surrounding violent and inhumane acts pointed toward the LGBTQ community—especially trans women and men of color. The GoFundMe campaign was set up to create a retainer so that a lawyer can be hired and help us find justice for Ashley. Please donate if you can, and spread the word.

I somehow managed to book a national commercial during a global pandemic. It shoots today (remotely, with a zoomed-in director). We’ve carefully placed all of our moving boxes, and the rest of the complete mayhem, in the bedroom, away from where are are shooting. We walked around the #HollywoodReservoir this morn

We walked around the #HollywoodReservoir this morning ... because we have less than a month left here in LA ... and in the midst of so much work that my brain my explode, I want to check things off my wanderlust list. It was hot and we had to leave the dogs at home, but it was lovely in a Southern California-type of way that I will definitely miss. That said, I’m ready to go back to the NY mountains and am so happy I will be there for the autumnal leaves and crisp fall. I’ve never really been a hiking person—even though much of my running had taken me onto trails (I’ve fallen on non-pavement runs more times than I care to admit)—but I am definitely seeking pandemic-friendly activities (drive-in movies, anyone?), and am ready to be an outdoor explorer. There’s so much to do here before I leave that I don’t know where to begin (so I will keep procrastinating and writing this IG post); I admit I’d rather be hiking than preparing for the trip (@sarahmclaughlin inspires the heck outta me!). 28 days and counting ... #newyorkstateofmind #hollywood #vegan #veganlesbian #hikingdykes

We will miss you, West Hollywood ... and Californi

We will miss you, West Hollywood ... and California. It’s back to NY we go. No use spending such an ungodly amount on rent for a one-bedroom in the middle of a neighborhood that is no longer meeting our needs. We will be in the Catskills for the next little while (OUR CAT WANTS YOU TO KNOW THAT SHE ALREADY HAS SKILLS AND THAT WE ARE MOVING TO A PLACE WITH A RIDICULOUSLY OBVIOUS NAME). In about a month, the six of us (that’s us + three dogs + an annoyed cat) will be RVing across the country and practicing social distancing the whole time. We pull into our tiny little country town—complete with a drive-in movie theater and an ice cream shop that has #vegan flavors and an outdoor window—on August 31. I will also be near Mariann and Rose 🌹 Dog, which I’m VERY excited about, and we have some super cool @ourhenhouse happenings to announce very soon. I figured out that I will be rolling on in to NY four years TO THE DAY after leaving, which is completely surreal, since California feels like it’s been a lifetime long. I am sure I will have further thoughts as the trip nears and as I build the next phase (including some rad projects that I will tell you about soon ... all with the goal of changing the world for animals) ... from a picturesque town that is close enough to NYC that when it feels safer again, I can rejoin my old stomping ground with eager regularity. I have a lot of feelings about leaving ... the people and places and beaches and mountains and redwoods and cities and oh my god the goddam tears I cried in this place ... and the friends I made. And the love I felt. And the people I said goodbye to. And the parts of me I said goodbye to along with them. And the grey hair I got. And the career paths and creative work I rediscovered. And the activism I strengthened and refocused that bolsters and challenges me every day. I feel tired so often, and I’m craving that mountain air and my complex east coast and the seasons and the people there. But I will miss California intensely; my chosen family members here and my routines that I have grown to adore. It’s just not our time right now, California. Despite how much I love you. Let’s pause now. See you again soon.
